Basis risk
A CFA and FRM term, defined in plain English with the distinction examiners test.
What it means
The risk that a hedge and the exposure it hedges do not move together, leaving a residual.
The exam angle
Arises from mismatched underlying, maturity or location. A hedge is a swap of price risk for basis risk, not an elimination of risk.
