BA II Plus time value of money (TVM): keystrokes and a worked example

Annuities, loans, bond prices and retirement problems in every level.

The keys

2NDCLR TVMClears N, I/Y, PV, PMT and FV. Do this every time.
valueN, valueI/Y, …Enter any four of the five TVM variables.
CPTthen the fifth keyComputes the missing one.

Worked example

Five annual payments of 1,000 at 8%. What are they worth today?

2NDCLR TVMStart clean.
5NFive periods.
8I/YRate per period, as a percentage — not 0.08.
1000PMTPayment received.
0FVNothing at the end.
CPTPVPV = −3,992.71.
PV = −3,992.71 (negative: you pay this to receive the payments)

The trap

Signs follow cash: money in is positive, money out negative. Entering PV and FV with the same sign on a bond gives an error or nonsense.

The terms behind it

  • Present valueWhat a future cash flow is worth today, found by discounting it at a rate that reflects its risk and timing.
  • Future valueWhat a sum invested today grows to by a stated date at a stated rate.
  • AnnuityA series of equal cash flows at equal intervals.
  • PerpetuityAn annuity with no end date — a level cash flow received forever.
